5 Amazingly Powerful Videos about Food Waste

Over the past couple of months, I’ve engrossed myself in learning about food waste. Why? When I first encountered these videos, I was shocked, amazed and knew immediately that I wanted to advocate for improving our food system. These videos are amazingly powerful at demonstrating the issues and causes around our food waste epidemic.

1. The Big Waste: Why Do We Throw Away So Much Food?

In only 10-minutes, this video goes over so much information on food waste, making it a great starter video. But what really sold me is that this video talks about the impact of our attitude more than any other video. The final story may be my favorite part.

2. Food Wastage Footprint

Food waste is not just an American issue, but a global issue. This video by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations summarizes the issue of food waste on a global level.

3. TedxTeen Talk: How To End The Food Waste Fiasco

This was one of the first videos I watched about food waste. Just look at the sheer volume of food that Rob Greenfield collected from dumpsters in cities across the US. He shows just how beautiful and edible wasted food is, and he highlights ways that we can reduce waste in our households and communities.

4. Food For Tomorrow 2015 Keynote: A New Proposal on Food Waste

This talk is filled with a truck load of shockingly powerful information, and congresswoman Chellie Pingree presents it in the clearest and most understandable way I’ve seen so far. My favorite quote? “If food waste was a country, it would be the third largest contributor to greenhouse gas pollution in the world.”

5. “Just Eat It”

Just Eat It is a full documentary following a couple that vows to live only on food that would otherwise be thrown away. It’s well worth taking the 74 minutes out of your day to watch this award-winning documentary. Here’s the trailer:
